The election of a Labour government has brought with it the promise of targeted active travel investment across the country. Highway Cycles spoke to Josh Dean MP, elected representative for Hertford and Stortford, to find out more.
A recent survey from Global Action Plan stated that 3 in 4 people in the UK feel their health is impacted by outdoor air pollution, and nearly 80% of the public believe that politicians should be making changes to decrease air pollution.
After a previous cut in active travel investment last year, in the 2024 Autumn budget, the Chancellor announced a staggering £100 million of funding, with a clear onus on prioritising sustainable transport.
The budget stated that the funding will be filtered down into local authorities, with the onus on them to install cycling infrastructure and improvement pavements and footways.
Last month, the Transport Secretary outlined her vision for a new Integrated National Transport Strategy, which will be the first in a quarter of a century that sets out a people first approach.
Also outlined was the intention to promote cycling and walking as the best choice for shorter journeys, and prioritise pavement repairs, safe crossing and cycle infrastructure where they are needed most.
The benefits of these future investments are boundless- a reduced cost and therefore strain on the NHS, a cut in emissions and safer roads for vulnerable road users.
Josh Dean became the Member of Parliament for Hertford and Stortford in 2024, but has worked over the last four years in promoting active travel in his local area, including supporting the addition of more bike parking, partial road closures and reduction in street parking.
Josh Dean MP said: “I am delighted to support Labour’s plans for active travel in the UK. By committing to increased funding for cycling infrastructure, improving road design to prioritise safety, and setting bold targets for cycling and walking, these measures have the potential to transform how we move in Hertfordshire.
“Importantly, this vision ensures active travel is accessible to everyone, from children cycling to school, to older residents enjoying safer streets. By fostering healthier, greener, and more inclusive communities within Hertfordshire, these initiatives will reduce congestion, improve air quality, and boost the economy, making a tangible difference in our lives.”
